Driving to the famous UNESCO World Heritage site and Game of Thrones filming location.
Ait Benhaddou is Morocco's most famous ksar (fortified village) and for good reason - it's absolutely stunning. The drive from Marrakech takes about 3.5-4 hours via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, one of Morocco's most spectacular mountain roads. Leave early (7-8am) to avoid both city traffic and afternoon heat. The route climbs to over 2,200 meters elevation with dramatic hairpin turns and incredible views. There are viewpoint stops - take them, but be careful where you pull over as the road is narrow in places. The pass sometimes closes in winter due to snow, so check conditions beforehand. Once over the pass, you descend into a completely different landscape - more arid, rocky, and dramatic. Ait Benhaddou sits on the old caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. You'll recognize it immediately if you've seen Game of Thrones (Yunkai scenes), Gladiator, or Lawrence of Arabia - it's been in dozens of films. Park in the lot below the ksar (about 10 dirhams) and walk across the usually-dry riverbed. Some locals offer to guide you through - a guide provides great historical context but isn't mandatory. The climb to the top takes 20-30 minutes and offers panoramic views worth every step. Best light for photography is early morning or late afternoon when the earthen walls glow golden. The site gets tour buses around 11am-2pm, so time your visit before or after if possible. Spend 1.3-2 hours exploring. There are simple cafes at the base for lunch with great terraces overlooking the ksar - the tagines are excellent. The return drive is equally beautiful. You can combine this with Ouarzazate (Hollywood of Morocco) which is only 30 minutes away, where film studios offer tours. Make it a full day trip or stay overnight in Ouarzazate to break up the driving.
