Discover secret spots and breathtaking locations that are just a short drive away from the Red City.
Everyone knows about the big tourist spots, but some of my favorite places around Marrakech are the ones tourists rarely find. Take the Agafay Desert - just 40 minutes from the city center, and it feels like you're on the moon. The rocky, rolling landscape is completely different from the Sahara sand dunes everyone expects. Perfect for sunset with way fewer crowds. Then there's Ouzoud Waterfalls - about 2.5 hours northeast. Worth every minute of the drive. These 110-meter cascades are North Africa's highest, and you can swim in the pools below. Go early morning to beat the tour buses. The Ourika Valley is another gem, especially in spring when everything's green and the snow is still on the peaks above. Stop at the Berber villages along the way - the hospitality is genuine. Lake Takerkoust is great for a quick escape - only 30 minutes away, perfect for kayaking or just a lakeside lunch. For something really off the beaten path, drive to Amizmiz on Tuesday for the weekly souk - it's authentic local life, not staged for tourists. The Asni Valley road takes you through gorgeous scenery with the Toubkal massif as your backdrop. Imlil village is the jumping-off point for mountain treks, but even just visiting for lunch and walking around is lovely. Don't miss the Lalla Takerkoust road for scenic viewpoints. And if you want a quiet beach vibe, Sidi Kaouki near Essaouira is much more laid-back than Essaouira itself. Finally, the Cascades d'Ouzoud area has olive groves and small villages that time forgot.
