Policies and tips for bringing your furry friend along for the ride.
More and more people want to bring their pets on vacation, and I totally get it - leaving your dog or cat behind is hard. We allow pets in most of our vehicles with advance notice and a small cleaning fee (usually 200-300 dirhams). Here's what you need to know to make it work smoothly. First, check Morocco's entry requirements for pets - you'll need vaccination records (especially rabies), a health certificate from your vet issued within 10 days of travel, and usually a microchip. Airlines have specific carrier requirements if you're flying in. Once here, having a car is actually the best way to travel with pets since many buses and trains don't allow them. Bring a pet carrier or car harness for safety - unsecured pets are dangerous in sudden stops. Cover the back seat with a blanket or pet cover to protect the upholstery from hair and scratches - this helps you avoid extra cleaning fees. Pack plenty of water and a bowl - Morocco gets hot and pets dehydrate quickly. Never leave your pet in a parked car, especially in warm months - temperatures inside can become deadly within minutes. Plan your stops around pet needs - rest areas on highways usually have grassy spaces. Many Moroccan hotels and riads are pet-friendly, especially outside major tourist areas, but always confirm when booking. Beaches are generally OK for dogs, particularly outside summer season. In cities, keep dogs leashed as street cats and dogs are common and interactions can be unpredictable. Moroccan attitudes toward pets vary - rural areas may be more cautious around dogs, while expat-heavy areas like Marrakech's Guéliz are very pet-friendly. Bring any medications your pet needs - veterinary care exists in cities but is limited in rural areas. Pet stores in major cities sell food and supplies, but bring enough of your pet's regular food to avoid stomach issues from sudden diet changes. Some restaurants with terraces allow pets, especially in tourist areas. Be considerate and clean up after your pet always. At car return, vacuum visible pet hair and remove any mess - basic courtesy prevents additional charges. With planning, traveling Morocco with your pet is absolutely doable and they'll love the adventure as much as you do.
