Why a 4x4 is essential for desert exploration and what to expect on the dunes.
The Sahara Desert - it's probably why you're coming to Morocco in the first place. And let me be clear: you absolutely need a proper 4x4 for this. Not just an SUV - a real four-wheel drive like our Toyota Prado or Land Cruiser. The drives to Merzouga or Zagora start on paved roads but once you get close to the dunes, it's sand and rocky tracks. Two-wheel drive will get you stuck immediately, and getting unstuck in 45-degree heat costs money and ruins your schedule. Here's what you need to know: lower your tire pressure before hitting sand - around 1.0-1.2 bar (15-18 PSI). This increases traction dramatically. You can re-inflate at any gas station. Momentum is your friend in sand - maintain steady speed, don't brake suddenly, and if you feel yourself sinking, don't panic and floor it (that digs you deeper). Instead, back out slowly and try a different line. Bring recovery boards or sand ladders if you're going really remote. Essential items: minimum 5 liters of extra water per person, fully charged phone with offline maps downloaded, sunscreen, hat, and let someone know your itinerary. The sun is no joke - heat exhaustion happens fast. Best time for Sahara trips is October through April - summer is dangerously hot. Early morning and late afternoon offer the best light and cooler temperatures. The actual dune bashing is thrilling but optional - most people are happy with the drive to the desert camps and camel rides. Respect the environment - don't leave trash, stick to existing tracks when possible, and if you're camping, follow leave-no-trace principles. The Sahara is one of the world's most stunning landscapes - the silence, the stars at night, the endless dunes. A 4x4 gets you there safely.
