Cultural Etiquette for Road Trippers

Respecting local customs and interacting with locals during your stops.

Morocco is one of the most welcoming countries I've ever driven through, and understanding local culture makes your road trip so much richer. Start with basic greetings - 'Salam alaikum' (peace be upon you) works everywhere, and 'shukran' (thank you) goes a long way. People genuinely appreciate when tourists make the effort. If you're asking for directions, approach with respect and patience. Not everyone speaks English, but between French, Arabic, and hand gestures, you'll figure it out. When stopping in small villages, respect that you're a guest in someone's community, not a tourist attraction. Always ask before photographing people, especially women and children - many prefer privacy. Offering a few dirhams for posed photos is appropriate. Dress modestly, particularly in rural areas - shoulders and knees covered is the general rule, especially for women. In mosques, non-Muslims typically can't enter, so admire from outside. During prayer times (five times daily), be patient if shops close briefly. In Ramadan, don't eat, drink, or smoke in public during daylight hours out of respect for those fasting. If invited for tea (this happens!), accepting is polite - it's a key part of Moroccan hospitality. Take your shoes off when entering homes. When driving through villages, slow down - kids and animals often share the road. If someone helps you with directions or a car problem, a small tip is appreciated but not demanded. Market haggling is expected and fun, but keep it friendly. Learn the difference between genuine hospitality and people wanting to be paid guides. Trust your instincts. Most importantly, approach interactions with openness and respect - Moroccans are incredibly proud of their country and love sharing it with appreciative visitors.
